The Spring Of Awareness  (Karena Series)

Karena examined “Big Sky’s” body,
She had many thoughts about his death.
But, would hold her tongue until she spoke
to Powhatan, he will know what to do.

There were disturbing facts about his death,
and the outcome could be even more disturbing.
Upon sunset she will call for the Great Spirit
 to fill her with healing energy and wisdom.

There were questions that needed to be answered,
Powhatan was the only one that could do that.
He is wiser than any man she knew,
and more powerful than any spirit she could feel.

The village was quiet and guarded by many strong warriors,
they immediately took “Big Sky’s" body and placed him
in the Medicine dwelling.  Karena request Powhatan
and the elders to join her there.

After what seemed like hours, they all emerged
solemn faced and quiet.
Powhatan spoke to the warriors,
“My People have been hurt for so long,

This is a very sad day for our Nation.
" Big Sky” has been murdered
by one of our own people.
I must know who is responsible for his death.

I will not rest until I find who has done such
a crime against their own kind.
This is unforgivable, against all of our beliefs
and this person must be punished.

I am so saddened by this,
I shall go to my bed now,
to rest my heavy heart. Karena, Please
come with me, I need your healing powers.

Karena obeyed her Chief,
and stayed with him through the night.
“Karena, you are the bravest woman
I have ever met. You are wise beyond any elder,
I am proud to know you as my Medicine Woman”.

She completed a potion of many herbs,
roots and berries, and gave it to him,
Powhatan, my chief, trust that I have mixed
you this with love and devotion, now drink
and find calming sleep entering your body.”

A few minutes after drinking her potion,
Powhatan was snoring with contentment.
She was so happy to have been able to
calm him down and send him to the spirit world for the night.

Karena could not sleep, the restless night
brought darkness of a sad kind. Her thoughts kept her awake.  She could not shake the darkness that entrapped her mind.  It was a very heavy night.

The evidence points to two people,
One thought that kept racing through her mind
was "How could someone do such a thing?"
The Great Spirit and Mother Earth
will be forever saddened by this act of hatred.

Morning stole her one hour of sleep,
and stumbling out of the Chief's dwelling
she found herself face to face with
one of the men that could be a murderer.

"Tumas, where have you been last night?"
Karena, I have done a terrible thing, I am ashamed of myself.  I should fly into the sun
and burn to ashes, as I deserve."

"Tumas, what have you done that could be so terrible as to want to die? Do you not realize
that you have a family to take care of, a woman
who loves you more than life?"

"Karena, I do not deserve you,
My children will be ashamed of their father,
I cannot bear that, I must go, and seek
counsel with the elders. I must confess for the
crime I have committed."

Tumas walked away, and Karena began to
sob into her hands, "Oh, Great Spirit,
tell me it isn't so, please tell me it isn't so."
Powhatan emerged from his dwelling,
"Karena where has Tumas gone?"

"My Chief, he has gone to talk to the Elders,
he says he has committed a crime. I fear he is to confess as the killer of Big Sky.  What is my family
going to do without him?"

"Karena, go back inside of my dwelling,
wait there until I return. I will speak to the Council of Elders and Tumas.  We will get to the bottom of all of this."

Karena obeyed her Chief, she was pacing back and forth, when finally Powhatan returned.
"I have sad news, Tumas has released George Percy, He said he could not kill an innocent man"

"Karena, do you know what this means? There will be war for our people, The white man will seek
revenge, and we will be in grave danger."
Karena stood there staring at this great Chief.
The only thing she could do was cry.
