A Brief history that inspired this edition to the Karena, Eagle Medicine Woman Series: * August 9, 1610 - Tired of waiting for a response from Powhatan, Lord De la Warr sent Percy with 70 men to attack the Paspahegh capital, burning the houses and cutting down their cornfields. They killed 65 to 75, and captured one of Wowinchopunk's wives and her children. Returning downstream, the English threw the children overboard, and shot out "their Braynes in the water". The queen was stabbed to death in Jamestown. The Paspahegh never recover from this attack, and abandon their town. This attack, and the offense of killing royal women and children, ignites the First Anglo-Powhatan War.

Outrageous Murder, The War Begins (Karena series) by Amber "V" Moonstone 5/28/09 The day was hot and humid, there was a darkness that dwelled among the people. Someone rode up with a package for Powhatan. He was a neigboring brave of questionable character. He rode up to the reservation, asking to see the Chief. Powhatan granted him permission to enter his dwelling, In a matter of moments there was a loud shrill heard. Everyone ran toward the Chief's dwelling, Karena was the only one allowed to enter . To her astonishment, Chief Powhatan was sitting cradling a bag in his arms. Karena spoke gently to Powhatan, "My Chief, we must respond to this threat, The White man will harm our innocent people, the women and children will be their targets." "Karena, when I opened the bag and found my nephew's hand enclosed, I was outraged, I became very angry and wanted to kill them, but the Great Spirit filled me with wisdom." "I have a plan, we must not show our weakness, by getting angered by such outrageous murder. The time will come when our people will show the white man why they better go back to their homeland". Karena knew in her heart what the truth was, but in her soul, she wanted to trust and believe in what her chief was telling her. She knew that her people would never be safe again. Two full moons pass since that day, Powhatan announces sad news throughout the villages, "The white man attacked the Paspahegh village, many men, woman and children were killed including some of our royal family." Powhatan goes into seclusion. The news of the royal woman and children's deaths fill their hearts with hatred and revenge. How dare they kill and torture the royal family. What God did they worship? Do they know that war is inevitable? Why did they provoke such evil in our land? The Powhatan people will not lay down and die, they will fight until the very last brave man is dead!
