A Message from Father Spirit
by Amber "V" Moonstone
3/30/13

Eyes toward the horizon,
The Great Eagle flew with grace,
his message was from Father Spirit,
warning of a coming conflict.

My mind sent whirling,
trying to imagine what this means,
was is a conflict within my own spirit,
or did it have to do with my people.

All night I tossed and turned,
not getting much sleep,
thinking of that great bird
and it's message.

As I arose from slumber,
the sun blazed with great intensity,
I was caught off guard,
my dwelling was in a shambles.

What happened after I fell asleep,
Did I sleep walk into a mess,
or did someone come to my rest place,
where only sacred thoughts dwelled.

I could not make any sense of any of it,
so I walked out into the stunning morning air
the morning mist had lifted
only sunshine and a cool breeze remained.

Walking toward the river bed, I felt darkness invading,
something definitely happened during the night,
the other dwellings were disturbed and there was
evidence of fires burning out of control in the ajacent woods.

Could this be a war party beginning?
Where is everyone?  Just as I asked that question,
my sister's child, Morning Glory tugged at my dress.
"I'm scared, everyone is gone."

I picked her up and ran toward the forest.
What on Earth was happening?
After what seemed like hours,
we found a brook and drank much needed water.

Where was I going?
Why did I run with this child of my sister?
We need to find out where our tribe has gone.
Suddenly, I heard voices approaching.

We took cover inside a very large bush.
The voices spoke English,
I understood what they were saying.
"We will attack every village until all have been killed."

My heart stopped, it was not a war party of my people,
but a planned massacre from the white man.
How was I to warn the other tribes with Morning Glory
stuck to me like a mudpie.

I had to get to the next village before the white men,
I knew a short way there,
surely the white man would not know this way.
We ran as fast as our feet could take us.

As we approached the village,
everyone was milling about,
no idea of what was coming.
I yelled, "Please, everyone must leave now.

The White man is coming,
he has killed all my people,
and will not stop until everyone is dead.
Please, gather your things and children, NOW!"

Everyone began scurring around like ants,
they grabbed whatever they could,
and fled on foot.
The horses were left behind, they could be traced.

Settled within a mountain range,
our perch was perfect to watch the white man's movement.
We  were not going to let them win.
We are a proud people and we will survive!

In the time of your father's father, I'm sure this happened just that you have told us today. It is a sad commentary on how Americans treated their own people.
