This piece is one of a series of writings depicting the author’s recent visit to the Dachau Concentration Camp, 10 miles north of Munich, in the southern part of Germany.

Nearly 200,000 prisoners were interned at Dachau where over 25,000 perished.

“Arbeit Macht Frei”, or “…Work Brings Freedom…” an expression marking the entry ways to this infamous Nazi concentration camp, a final path of many new arrivals in the camp.

Poem Artwork

Present, past, and future…

the season is now to reflect and remember,

Here in a former sickening place of human horror and atrocity,

The likeness of such that should not be repeated,

Yet it is in places named Dafur, Sudan…

It’s only a slogan and metal sign--- leading to self sacrifice in the form of exhaustive labor,

To know it is false hope for survival,

For human beasts sickly bent on racial destruction,

A declaration and inscription,

ordered by the SS then,

But surprisingly copied by others today,

To torment or make a statement,

Insult to the forced labor,

Barbed wire and twisted metal,

Loaded with death and sickness,

The cries of pain echoing through the trees,

Stone covered Main Street

for endless roll calls---

it could have been a call to death or life for another day.

Human experiments and finishing touches,

No mercy, no joy, far away from love

Thousands in silence,

From many nations, pulled in secrecy

kept from a world and view,

but everyone knew,

Yet did nothing and turned the other cheek…

Survivors will tell to get right with God,

Strive and apply to survive daily and finish,

To grasp a minute of surviving breath and life,

Victor Frankl found meaning in all forms of existence,

to find reason for continued living.

to say yes to life even in death.

“…Plus Jamais…Nie Wieder…” a wall of steel writes---

to tell us today “…never again, never again…”

Would that it would be "never again," Myles. Sadly, horrors continue on each day in this world. Thank you for the reminder. Love and peace to you,

Regis

Your words painted images I had forgotten! Thank you for sharing and reminding us of what should never be allowed to happen, but as you say it seems to continue in different places but no less an abominable. I must begin extra prayers!

I have been to this place of horror, and I do hear your hearts cry, "Never again, Never again!"

Tuberculosis: The Greatest Story Never Told by Frank Ryan

The heroic story of how a small group of people, few of them TB experts, found the cure for the greatest killer in human history. But the battle needed to be extended to all sufferers. Why have we failed to take the miracle to the developing world?
