"The best thing to give to your enemy is forgiveness; to an opponent, tolerance; to a friend, your heart; to your child, a good example; to a father, deference; to your mother, conduct that will make her proud of you; to yourself, respect; to all men, charity." - Francis Maitland Balfour
My eyes are drenched with sunshine
I am blinded by the strong light
I have no shield against spears of light
as sweat pours because of the load I carry
the burden from my pack and weapon is not much though
as a memory of home is stirred and takes the weight
off my mind and back
carrying me back to a simpler time...
when a child’s laughter is but pleasant music
greeted by a grandmother’s smile and open hand
with this warm embrace I see her face to guide me as we walk
through the rocks on an Pacific Oceanside
to our favorite fishing place
where the swirling blue waters give up
no trace of a visit or quiet afternoons spent together
only to spend time with my grandma
there is no equal
for the many words not said
just a gentle hand and kind spirit
that touched my heart forever
But it’s been 30 years now since you’ve been gone
taken away from me because of a driver
DUI is what they call it
but that day robbed me of a special maternal love
like losing a precious diamond that can’t be found
Time passes
I have a family of my own now Grandma
a beautiful and loving wife as a friend and companion
a son and daughter you would be proud of to take with you
to the Oceanside where memories do not fade
but time holds dear.
You decorated my life with lights and blessings
In the whispers of the mountains and valleys
and in all circumstances
I experience what is good, acceptable, and perfect.
I am grateful and celebrate the moment
And I will finish well.
a Beautiful tribute and memory to the Grandmother you knew and loved so much. I know she is in your heart in her spirit forever. Never had grandmothers, but am now myself a grandmother to 9. Good writing.
Myles, you have chosen wisely the photograph to enhance your endearing words of a time long past. So sorry your grandmother was taken from you in such a horrific manner, but I am sure she is always watching and guiding you with her maternal love. Walks on the beach, or just to sit and listen to the waves is a God sent gift. Wonderful heartfelt prose, always enjoyed.....
My grandmother was very special to me and I can see images of her bent over her favorite wood stove as she stoked the fire in the morning to make cornbread for lunch to accompany the navy beans and cabbage. Ah, memories.
Some of my best childhood memories revolve around my time spent with my beloved grandmother, and I'm so sorry to hear you lost yours in such a tragic way. But they really do live on, in our hearts and souls.
Myles - This is loving and respectful. I, too, had such a grandmother, who lived with my family for much of the time I was coming along in school years. How we miss them and their grace and wisdom ! ! ! Your words bring a tight throat and tears. Each and every word of yours is a sparkle in your diamond, and they have made my day! Thank you. Have sent you a message, as well. Keep safe. - Bill
