Poem Artwork

I watch the weaver wind his words
through simple strands of flaxen phrase
he effortlessly leads the loom
his limber fingers flashing

He nimbly bends his shapes and shades
a magic mix of hidden hues
with supple curls and subtle swirls
a masterpiece creating

His woven opus moves my muse
who lights creation's fervent flame
and hastens me to hammer out
a work of my own weaving

     Hurry
          Homeward
     Workbench
          Calling
     Rhythms
          Writhing
     Blue-prints
          Sprawling

                    Billows
                         Breathy
                    Oven
                         Screaming
                    Leathers
                         Spark-specked
                    Embers
                         Gleaming

     Anvil
          Anguished
     Hammer
          Singing
     Iron
          White-hot
     Forceps
          Ringing

                    Salt-sweat
                         Streaming
                    Eardrums
                          Banging
                    Forearms
                         Quaking
                    Temples
                         Clanging

Cacophonous         creation         done
its   speckled    surface sparkles  darkly
lying     'longside    weaver's   wonders
waiting         for         due        praises
The ooo's and ahhh's pass by alighting
lightly     on      the     woolen    works
of     tapestries     so      tightly-twined
now       lying      limp      beside     us
I   shuck   my   clumsy  gauntlets   and
let    fall     my   apron    with  a  shrug
I  mop   my   brow   and  ask  the  sun
why     no    one   wants   an   iron rug

Leo, I'm a bit late getting here. Charlie, on reading one of
my things, suggested I read your Lament of the Blacksmith.
I'm glad she did. I like it and plan to read more of your work.

I'm surprised at how few reviews this masterpiece has received . . . are the literati wearing blinders or are they on vacation?! This is a piece of Americana here, people . . . embrace your culture!! Give this man his due. Great write, my compatriot, and I am not given to idle praise!!

Wow! This was pure art in motion! Great poem structure. the singling out of the first letter in bold just makes the whole poem come at you in 3-D. Absolute great write!!

So very interesting and creative! A dying breed blacksmiths are and it is so sad for such a wondrous art to disappear.....

Be safe,
Karen

I would buy it for its folk art value. Superb poem of the blacksmith trying to be creative. My great great grandfather, was a blacksmith for a Wisconsin regiment in the Civil War. We have nothing written from him.
