Poem Artwork

Your arrival on island Hispaniola
  was cause for moonlight feast.

We shared fine first fruits of harvest abundance,
  reclined in laughter sweet.

Your safe return had been so long in coming;
  tonight we’d celebrate.

You raised me up and kissed me, holding me close,
told me that you’d missed us.

With joy I danced in time with tropical beat,
  my long hair flowing free.

Lifting bare feet to knee, swaying hip to hip,
  I was under love’s spell.

Unashamed of gift of sensuality,
  one with native drums, I

celebrated intoxicating rhythm,
  reunion, harmony.

But somewhere in distant chants of fateful night
  your passion warped, raged wild.

By pale light of early dawn, you’d turned on me,
  condemned, convicted me.

“Let the loose, licentious woman burn to death.”
  You led the rally cry.

Stunned I begged for mercy, asked forgiveness for
  whatever wrong I caused.

Steely-eyed, parading for the masses, you
  stoked fire with searing hate

and said it was too late, it was meant to be,
  smiled at my flesh burning.

Did you ever think my spirit would return?
  Reunited here, now,

you’ve a choice to make: will you change the story
  before it is too late?

Heads you lose tails you lose, kinda write, but hoping for something bright.

How many do leave it, and so much too late.
Clever, as it leaves the reader pondering.

Nice one Dawn....

Wow - the power and the passion ... and ultimately the pleading, Dawn! What a naked write this is - intriguing and consuming, too! The whole is neatly encompassed in the colour and heat of a tropical setting where the red blood is pulsating!! The agony and the ecstasy, this Caribbean cornucopia has it all! A pleasure to read. Thank you. Kate xx
