As Dead Sea of former life parted,
you became pillar of protection
            and beckoned me on toward

promised land
of freedom God set aside for me.
At last, because of you, I could see.

So when hope cowers now, hides itself
inside the shell of my fearfulness
            I evoke efficacious memory of

your eyes
for reflected in bottomless pools,
I first beheld precious soul of me.

In desert, river flowed from a rock
and manna fell from on high and you,
            my Moses, faithful, uncompromising,

steadfast,
instilled strong faith in me. I believed
you’d lead me on 'til God came for you.

If I should doubt love’s ability
to break barriers, flood me with waves
            of unexpected grace, I recall

sudden wind
that swept away final argument
with God who answered my desperate plea.

I wander, far from River Jordan,
thirsty for yesterdays, Egypt Land.
            Bewildered by lonely journey

I fall again
into a traveler’s trance, draw circles
in the ever-shifting desert sand.

Somehow I summon courage to stand
alone in desolate desert dream.
I think I never told you how I loved

your hands,
strong, so beautiful, tracing circles
on the empty page. I walk them now.

River of Memories: An Appalachian Boyhood by David Thompson

For a time, I perched myself on a flat rock, comparing my life with the Guyandotte River. Just as its tributaries replenish it daily, changing it in some small—sometimes great—degree, so have the day-to-day occurrences of life changed me. Like the ri
