This is truly something that should be cherished, not punished. The creativity of this child-character is priceless--something that could be a teaching example for children and parents/grandparents alike. The only reason I can think of for a child to be punished is that parents/grandparents think too materialistically of things that don't matter that can be replaced, instead of focusing on the child who cannot be replaced.
Instead of reacting hastily for the wrong reasons, parents should stop, take a breath, pick up the child and ask "what have we here?" Allow the child to have a wonderful opportunity to "PRESENT A PROPOSAL explaining what they did and why, and THEN the parent could say, "well, that's interesting. But you know, next time, let's do this together and instead of using a lot of personal items (the lesson there being not to use other person's items without permission) and head to the kitchen with a bowl, water, flour and make paper mache' with balloons."
But as a grandmother, I know I would have been upset and put my child in the corner back when I was a young inexperienced unwise parent. No harm, no foul. But I guess that's why God created Grandmas and Grandpas!

Oh the days of innocence, experimentation and trouble! I enjoyed all of the vivid imagination of this wonderful story; made me laugh too. I can even see and feel "Permagosh." Excellent for a picture book. My best, Gloria
I don't know how many times I have read this but each time I chuckle. I can see the little one sitting in the chair going, WHAT, what did I do? I can only believe your imagination is fed by...uh...experience.

This little guy seemed to know what he was
doing was a no-no, but once he got started,
the recipe almost made itself. I have to
sympathize with him. What if he had finished,
and won a Nobel prize for his cure-all?

That was a riot, loved it. My son did the same thing when he was little, only I was handing him the incredients off the high shelf.
