For my daughter, Emily, who recently turned seventeen.

Poem Artwork

Your eyes tell a secret that

your lips have yet to speak,

and I wish I could rummage

through your thoughts, perhaps

even linger there awhile.

I gaze into a steaming mug of coffee,

willing the sun to come up, silently

vowing to learn the virtue of patience.

“Good things come to those that wait,”

I hear my grandmother’s voice utter from

the distant past. I laugh, almost out loud…

such words of wisdom coming from a woman

who confessed to zero tolerance.

I pause inwardly to wash away any trace

of  pleading from my eyes, consciously sitting

more erect. I can do this, I convince myself, smiling.

You give me a quizzical look and a grin.

“What is it?” you ask. “Nothing,” I respond.

And together we pass the time watching the sunrise.

she will be leaving the nest. Nice write.

Biting the tongue has been such a difficult thing for me to learn... hee, hee... It is rewarding, yet hard, to silently sit back and watch our children mature and let go of the apron strings.

I love your use of the word "rummage." It is perfectly befitting a mother curious about the goings-on in a maturing child's life. Your wisdom emanates from your lovingly created scene.

Firstly, Dawn,
Congratulations to Emily and Happy Birthday!

What strikes me here is once again how you manage to achieve such tranquility of setting, your poetry breathes calm and understated optimism...quiet truth and knowing.. and here is abundant evidence.
Beautifully written.

This is so beautiful Dawn, and you convey the relationship at this point in time so truthfully. The barrier seems to vanish just as you embrace it, just as the sun rises.
You are such a wise mother, so graceful. As a mother of a girl almost this age myself, I so often ruin the perfection within such moments. I will try harder, you have inspired me!
Blessings,
Christine

I REALLY DO BELIEVE THAT A MOTHER KNOWS HER DAUGHTER EVEN BETTER THAN SHE KNOWS HERSELF...THIS GIFT SHE WILL NOT UNDERSTAND NOR COME TO APPRECIATE...UNTIL SHE HERSELF BECOMES A MOTHER. AND...GRANDMOTHER'S GIVE EXCELLENT ADVICE (AT 66 I CAN GO THERE (SMILE) ). THANKS FOR SHARING, DAWN AND GOD BLESS YOU AND YOURS. LOVE, JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Watching the sunrise together sounds like a truly magical moment Dawn. I believe that a mother's intuition is a magical thing in itself. "Your eyes tell a secret that your lips have yet to speak," is a beautiful line that displays your patience and trust that all will be revealed in due time. Thank you for sharing this wonderful experience.
My warmest wishes,
David

It tugs at your heart when some Mom's are not able to remember all the love they gave and now we become care takers of them.
