Art Piece entitled "Awakening", by Daniel B. Holeman

Poem Artwork

i want to wake up in another world sometimes
to open my eyes and see things differently
the cares of daily life sift through thought like autumn leaves
leaving whispering reminders of summers long past
voices echo in empty spaces
corners of consciousness reach out for love
then fall back in painful disappointment
to await another day's coming

how can i live my life when my mind is constantly thinking
of things and people from my past
or cares and worries of the future
is it possible to see clearly when the compass of my thoughts
is spinning out of control
when my vision is blurred by thoughts of her
and wistful fantasies of what might have been or what could be
if only things had gone or do go a different way

who is to tell what possibilities are to be followed
which path to choose out of the myriad choices
that confront me on the daily
my emotions confound clarity
and a moment's anger can lead to a day's worth of regret
and then it's gone
and another day has come
another chance to move into the light and release the darkness
that fell when i chose to go down the lesser path
knowing full well where that road would lead me

words of wisdom stumble across my tongue
tripping and falling in hopeless disarray
as i try to erase the scribbled writings of a lifetime
and create a new way of thinking in place of the old
experience has no place in this way of looking at reality
what was past must remain undeniably so
what is future must be left to fate and circumstance
what is now must be cherished and experienced to the fullest
what is love must be loved with all of my heart

perhaps if i truly attempt to live my life in this way
i will wake up to a new kind of living
and my eyes will see the world with new colors
unimagined and beautiful beyond my wildest imagination
i yearn for this day with all of my being
and know that the choice is mine to make
the choice to leave behind the shadow of myself
and carry forth the essence of who i am
recreating myself anew with each moment
regardless of what is to come

maybe then this haze of mediocrity that covers my eyes
will be pierced by the glory of truth
and a long and winding path of dismay
will end in joyous discovery
my heart swells to think of it
awakening every synapse in visceral awareness of the possibilities
before i return to my chosen path
and dress myself in lesser garments of muted clarity

tommorrow must be different or it will not come
for it will then be a repetition of today
and of yesterday and all the days past
the lessons that have battered my soul without remorse
a daunting reminder that what is done cannot be undone
but also a prescient recognition that
tommorrow is a new day and that the world will be different
if only i am too

Yesterdays are an experince, a journey to a better tomorrow for me. I don't believe in regrets - just learning experiences. These experiences and many choices we have are made much easier for me with His help.

God bless,

Sandie.

Mark, it is my first time to your site and I am speechless!
Arrrrghhh! My fingers won't keep up with my thoughts, provoked by such brilliant, honest, fantastically executed and eloquently expressed writing! This is a piece of raw wisdom carried in the chalice of transparent, frail humanity!!

Excellent introspective quest, Mark. The recognition of lost opportunity costs with each of our decisions is awesome if we dwell on it too much. It can have a paralyzing effect. The path you chose is the right one, aim ever higher for tomorrow.
Best regards,
Leland

Yoouur poetry is Awe-inspiring!
I could not help but think of an ANSWER
to your question pposed in the poem. I
experienced it on the night of
Nov.16th,2003. I felt the love of Jesus
Christ in my heart and had accepted HIM
as my savior! Everything you said, was answered for me by the love of Jesus Christ on that night. Maybe it can happen for you too, if it has not already.(smile)

... and yet, this road seems to run in a circle, or, better still, through cycles. And through each of them, we learn, and we grow. Also... don't we awaken often in another world, through poetry... art... music... and dream?... This is a masterpiece, Mark, in all its aspects and senses.

Sweeping and pensive, Mark, it seems the dilemma is not the choices, per se, but the fear of making the wrong or right ones, belaboring a mind that is kanted to forever question the would have's and could have's, the what if's and what about's, and the awareness that there is so much more unseen, a restlessness with just being and letting that confounds a deeper sense of yearning to know it all, to see in all ways, to have just a hint of how life should/could/would be if a grasp was attained. You are right, we do think much alike. If you'd like to send the first tentative start of collaborating, I'd love to expound on your thoughts! Or, perhaps I can come up with something tonight, everyone is asleep here, I've been 'looking' for something to write, one thing reading and reviewing does is give me bits and pieces to contemplate and try to assimilate into 'reason'. :) I love this piece and your turns of phrasing that make the whole so accessible to every Man!

Mark: What the looks of this wonderful poem, it sounds like you're a person who spends a great deal of time thinking and reflecting like I do. Sounds like you have a really positive outlook on life. Sometimes we have to go through some really tough things in life; it makes us much more appreciative of the good things. EXCELLENT poem and thanks so much for sharing your thoughts.

I love the verbal scenes you paint, Mark.
They are profound, yet shadowy-delicate, like
the groove of a good alto sax on an old love song.

Mark, we must be willing to change along with the world around us. If we aren't, then we will stay struggling in the same rut of yesterday. Unlike the chameleon, we sometimes have to put forth alot of extra energy to conform to the new. Good write,,I enjoyed reading this. Lisa
