The Beast

As always,
and for all time,
smoke comes
before fire.

Enter the wind,
on a freezing
cold day.

Black shades
drawn across
once blue skies,
an evil hand,
charcoaling day
into forever night.

Gallant efforts
become freezing rain
upon my head.

Dark plumes
erase the sky,
the ground below,
sketchy at best.

Ashes to ashes,
dust to dust.

A siren's chanting,
brings no comfort,
screaming in contest,
I am losing my voice.

A dragon's breath,
hot hungry tongues,
licking at the walls,
devours it all.

The beast has eaten
all my words,
swallowing me whole,
spitting my skeleton
to the earth.

I am quiet now,
gutted, deveined,
a soul depleted,
a silent scream.

"My house has burned down.  Now I can better see the moon.  -Basho

This is for Michelle Mead.  Your piece on the same subject matter, inspired me to revise my own piece in kindred spirit.  -Seems I'm always working on this particular piece, always trying to make up for lost.

Dammit Anne you're good. The selected words above are awesome! The whole concept of this piece is filled with imagery that we can see clearly.

Flames are the breath of the beast. And a mighty one it is, devouring all it reaches.
An excellent write,,but leaves me sad over Michelles loss. Lisa
