Maddy Come!

I probably will be writing about our adventures in the mountains a lot now since we spend our whole summers there and LOVE It! This is another true story and only the first adventure of many.

Poem Artwork

Maddy Come!

It was the first year on our mountain and what excitement lies ahead.
Waking up in the morning to a beautiful view and campfires before bed.
Our precious Newfoundland dog that enjoyed exploring in the woods.
Maddy would return much later with her treasures and her earthly goods.

A friend made us a large wood sign for the entrance to our land.
We couldn’t wait to put it up at the entry it would stand.
So we hopped on the 4 wheeler with the sign on the back.
Jim had a shovel tied on and a pistol in a gunny sack.

When we finally got to the entrance, Jim noticed faraway,
That Maddy was on the neighbor’s  land running and at play.
“Go chase her home” was what he said, so off I went to bring her home.
Screaming at the top of my lungs,  “Maddy Come,” getting louder in my tone.

The closer I got to my conquest the bigger the black spot got,
I was almost on top of it, when a thought entered my brain like a shot.
Oh lord, this isn’t our precious Maddy, it’s a gigantic black bear.
Who just looked up and saw me, driving right into his lair.

I reached behind me for the gunny sack but it was no longer there.
Jim must have taken it off; the only thing left was prayer.
But the frightening bear wasn’t interested in the meal I would make,
For he was already eating the fish he caught in the close by lake.

I high tailed it out of there as fast as I could go,
To tell Jim about my adventure and the bear I had in tow.
I saw Jim’s arms waving like a maniac, as I was getting close,
For he realized it wasn’t Maddy, and thought that I was toast.

He realized when I left him, that the animal had no tail.
He knew exactly what it was, he knew without fail.
No way to let me know, the 4 wheeler made too much racket.
So he just had to watch and wait, a shakin in his jacket.

Before Bonnie came along,
was life at the den getting to be a bore?
Who would have known what she had in store--
A gun-totin' husband and adventures galore!
So glad she survives them and goes back for more!
This is another great adventure, Bonnie. I especially like the last line, with Jim a-shakin in his jacket.

Love,
Your Sis Connie

You could had hold your ground and get yourself a bear coat!
Next time girl, let Maddy alone with her business and tell hubby to have his guns ready, not only his underwear.
