Garden Of Remembrance

I was away last week, on a Kiwanis International Convention in Saint John, New Brunswick. While in Saint John, I had an opportunity to see some of the old city, and found it both charming and inspirational. There's an ancient cemetary right downtown that one of the city's major benefactors has restored, and from the moment I walked through the gates I felt the most amazing sense of peace. I simply had to write about it. Some of the monuments are dated in the 1700's....

Poem Artwork

I lingered a while
In a place of rest,
Where mammoth oaks
Stood guard
Like giant sentinels
Oer timeworn monuments!
Faded names on ancient stones
All that remained
Of those long since departed!
Their tombstones,
Silent markers,
Have weathered centuries,
While generations vanished
Like shooting stars
Into the universe!
Birth was providence!
Death was predestined!
Dust to dust,
Bodies surrendered,
Returned to the earth!
I feel their spirits here,
Lingering,
Soaring effortlessly through the ages!
They are free,
No earthly chains
Weighing them down!
And in this peaceful garden of remembrance,
Where gentle breezes
And nature’s sweet melodies
Create blissful ambience,
I find solace!

The dead need the company and you need the peace. A perfect solution. Great poem by the way. Patrick

This is truly beautiful Anna ~

I'm never been so brave as you are, though, I become weepy or frightened in cemetaries, I suppose because I'm afraid a ghost will jump out at me!
Anyway, I do love the poem!
Namaste,
Christine

THere is something ultimately serene and calming in most grave sites, you should come down to Halifax some time and visit some of ours, we have one of the oldest in North America right on Barrington as well, one of our cemetaries is listed in Ripleys because it has a set of traffic lights inside it's fence. Welcome back Anna....

A peaceful old Garden of Remembrance sounds like a wonderful place to wander and seek solace, Annabel.
