Dementia - a thief that stealthily creeps in and takes the mind....we all know someone who's been affected by this horrible disease...

Poem Artwork

There’s sadness in her empty eyes,
She rarely smiles these days.
Time means nothing to her now
As she slowly drifts away.

Like a thief in the dead of night
It stole most all she had.
Bits and pieces all that’s left
Of her mind so troubled and sad.

There was nothing we could do,
She slipped right through our hands.
She needed help we couldn't give,
And we prayed she’d understand!

We’re family, and we’ll stand by her
Cause that’s what families are for.
Yet every time we visit her now
We’re strangers at the door.

Dear Annabel, so many of us are facing this sad situation as our parents grow old. My mom is now 88 and so far is pretty much in control of her faculties. I pray that God will allow her mind to remain clear until he sees fit to take her to her new home with him.
Your poem has good cadence and flow. I enjoyed reading it!

So far my mom's sense of humor is alive and well, and she still knows me for which I thank God. She is starting to have trouble with recalling older acquaintances and relatives. Nicely penned words for a difficult subject.Patrick

Beautifully written, full of heartache and loyalty!
Families are pulled into so much chaos from this awful illness...

Ah we all have a friend or neighbor... But Martha, even though afflicted seems very happy and cheerful and that is a blessing.

I was reading this at work and was interuppted by a phone call asking if we did diagnostic testing for dememntia. What a moment. I referred the caller to one of our inpatient hospitals. Her husband is starting down this sad road.
This is one area where we really should invest our resources.
Awesome poem as always Annabel.

So sad.... And so sad that this horrible condition comes to those we love and all hope and pray that we ourselves never fall prey to this terrible disease.

Anna, You've very touchingly addressed a very sad subject and more than did it justice. Nicely said, dear lady.

Thanks Dick
