Love Letters In The Sand

Poem Artwork

Separate Realities

I’ve got a brand new poodle skirt

Bobbie socks rolled down

Got a nickel for the juke box

Time to wipe away that frown

We can share Coke in a bottle

Two straws instead of one

We can be-bop till we both do drop

And our shoestrings come undone

We can cruise along the boulevard

Windows all rolled down

Radio a blastin’

Wakin’ up this lazy town

Then we’ll drive-in for a burger

Hail a skating waitress there

Not a stranger in the entire place

In this small town that we share

Tomorrow gonna buy a dress

For the senior prom

A semi-formal, party, gown

Picked out by me and mom

Then I’ll dream about that evening

When you’ll take me by the hand

And we’ll dance so close together

To “Love Letters In The Sand”

Very soon we’ll graduate

Learn the work we'll do for life

And not too long after that

We’ll become husband and wife

Within a year or maybe two

We will buy ourselves a home

On the street where we both were raised

Near our family, ne’er to roam

Then in a year, we'll both decide

To have children of our own

A boy for you, a girl for me

To bless our happy home

Our life all set we'll face each day

As our parents did before

We'll be true partners through our life

To love forever and adore

As we lived our lifetime's dream

The world around us changed

The choices that we thought we'd made

Had somehow been rearranged

Our life seemed so much simpler then

From the things we face today

We lost our sense of direction

And from our families we did stray

We’ve complicated everything

Worked ourselves into the ground

We buy much more than we can afford

To turn our neighbor's heads around

It’s no longer about who we are

But more about what we buy

We have lost the lust for life, we knew

And started living in the lie

This says it all about our material world that we live in Sherry...
We should never lose our zest for life...no matter the circumstances...

Well. All of us start our lives with huge expectations and the hope that things will become better or different. Eventually we have to wake up.
Great write.

Sherry, this is an exceptionally well-crafted composition illustrating how easily one forgets to stay on the path that was started so many years ago. It’s no wonder Americans are so deeply in debt and struggling just to make ends meet, instead of enjoying the simpler treasures one has in life (most of which are free). I never could understand why any one would want to keep up with the Jones’s. Oh well, such is life. But, this is a great poetic treasure. Thank you for sharing it. Take care and be well.

This is so sad and it happens oh so easily...and unconsciously!
You tell it well.

Beautiful lines!

"Our life all set we'll face each day
As our parents did before
We'll be true partners through our life
To love forever and adore"

That part sounds wonderful.

"It’s no longer about who we are
But more about what we buy
We have lost the lust for life, we knew
And started living in the lie."

Such a sad ending.

Dear Sherry,

It's amazing how our perceptions of life change, and what one may think is so important, is really worthless, and we risk losing ourself and everything that is real.

Great write Sherry.

This happens to a lot of people. The best thing to do is to throw away all those plastic cards. They lead your life by the nose. Without them you will live in harmony.

powerful, poignant, heartwrending truths in this stunningly written piece--start off innocent, and then try to recapture it in our later years...when it's often too late

And it happens before we know it! I think sometimes it's human nature to complicate things for no reason at all. You brought home lot's of memories Sherry..and made me stop and ask why! There are alot of folks out there trying to keep up with the Jones...before they know it...they are filing bankruptcy and the Jones is renting out the home for extra income!

Most excellent write Sherry! Excellent!
