Have you ever had a recurring dream that was a complete mystery?

A Recurring Dream

I’m in a place that never was yet it’s complete without a doubt

There are streets and buildings and people moving purposefully about.

My task is to find a certain spot on the other side of town

I will know it when I see it, it’s a place of some renown.

I am youthful and athletic all things seem to go my way

I leap and run and overcome obstacles that might hinder or delay.

As I near my destination my task becomes decidedly a duty

The terrain turns bleak and dreary the trees stripped of all their beauty.

I see a vision dimly lit and blurred within my sight

A lovely silhouette moves enchantingly her gown a wistful snowy white.

It’s a setting that’s engulfed in mystery yet it beckons me to stay

She comes and goes in apt repose then softly fades away.

Suddenly hell breaks loose like a bad excuse and madness swirls around

A storm lashes out and tosses me about upon the craggy rocky ground.

The serenity that was is now abuzz the calm is eliminated

And replaced with rage from a violent age that leaves things decimated.

I try to flee from what’s attacking me toward a distant mountain top

But I’m in a daze from this churning maze and a storm that will not stop.

As I battle wind and rain in this wild domain with shrapnel like debris

I suddenly awake and find an eerie calmness completely surrounds me.

What is this dream’s repeating theme that preys upon my mind?

Who is this beauty that I can’t quite see whose mysteries intertwine?

Why can’t I break through this mental ache that puts me in distress?

Where is the key eluding me that might relieve me from duress?

Alone now in my solitude this dream though gone still lingers

Like cash in hand or grains of sand that slip right through my fingers

Try as I might in day or night I can’t resolve this burning stigma

From beginning to end it will not bend, like a mystery inside an enigma.

A few lines definitely worked, but most of were was so stretched that they verily lost their rhythm. Never mind, not all of us can exert total control over the syllable, that it's music is primarily evident, on the plus side you do have a nice tan, albeit a little bit forced, King of like your rhyme scheme. As for 'captivating phrase' mentioned below, it wasn't exactly yours was it. Simply face. Wink. Wink.

Alas, I have no answers to these questions who, like dancers, nag your waking mind. But of the verse you now rehearse, so wondrous strange I find! The tone is calm, it's like a balm, it soothes and strips away pretention, to pull my soul towards its goal, a wholly new dimension.

Forgive my weak and feeble rhymes, in homage to your own I write. This is an inspiration, a poem so rich in lore, so lyrical and image-clad, with so much more in store... I hope it is continued ... yet to be told... yet to be done... what has gone on before...

Well done, Mr. Philips.

I believe she is Lady Liberty, and you believe she is being threatened by the coming upheaval that you are trying desperately to stop, but no one is hearing you, like a dream, a very bad dream, that keeps coming back, again and again and again, until it consumes your spirit––and you know what that means.

Let me find you a girlfriend so you can dream about her instead. ;-)

Some dreams I've had are so real it scares me.

If my analyst is right and dreams are preparation for pending 'confrontations' then your sleep cannot be quieted until the deed is done and 'mystery' resolved. I hope it is soon and that this 'mare is overkill for your needs ... or that the dream is 'just a dream, just a dream ...' Skillfully done.
