The Age of Enlightenment has come and gone
But why are we not any wiser?
Now when we think
It's just a nod and a wink
Some make God the common divisor.

Whatever we need
We simply concede
To those who've got piles of money
They make all the rules
Then install their own fools
Who are devoid of any thing funny.

The groves of academe
Were a wonderful theme
Where once great minds sought out truth
That has all been replaced
By clerics disgraced
With the charm of an impacted tooth.

The tycoons of industry
Hold the fate of the land
Working for them sure is fun
They pay the minimum
And if that's not enough--
Well, that's just tough
Unless you don't need an income.

There's oil a plenty
Global warming's baloney
If you're gay better pray it away
The answer to health care
Is to kill Obamacare
You'll get better on judgment day.

If you're thinking of dying goodbye
Cause thinking is no way to go
It's those who can think
Who surely will sink
And the rich will make sure that it's so.

The rich boys want more and then a lot more
Until they have about everything
And if there's pie in the sky
In the sweet by and by
They will grab it while still on the wing.

Most of us certainly seem to have completely missed the boat where 'The Age of Enlightenment' is concerned. All we can do is yell in the faces others until (hopefully)they too wake up and smell the flippin' coffee!
Love the way the rolling rhythm of truth keeps right on telling it.

Sometimes I wonder about the so-called "Age of Enlightenment" and what we commonly refer to as "The Dark Ages." Nicely penned.

Greed is not fickle, it's present everywhere. No end in sight.

you have successfully made all the proper stops on this planetary theme of greed, power and daily event ... nice work ...

It's so true that 'pain makes the pen fly' - as with this taut, idea-and-image rich piece, Edward. It would appear that we are well past the tipping point of the fair and even distribution which any moderate society with a conscience seeks to cultivate. The creed of greed is now proliferating because too little of the world's resources are in the hands of a cruelly savage, selfish corporate and fiscal global elite who our governments are pandering to. It seems we have been enlightened only to choose to walk into darkness. :( Right on the money here!

And they play games to see who has the most. If they keep this up they may become toast. You are write on with this exposé. If there doesn't come a reckoning soon, there will be hell to pay and the darkest scenarios will prevail.

I'm hopeful that we will all come to our senses about this and come up with ways to get the world's wealth distributed well among the people.

Hard hitting, gutsy words...it is pretty much the same here in the Uk..especially with our present government...in UK, everything is 'class based' ...still...., although we are told not so...Your country it looks pretty much the same...I read of your early life and it reminded me very much of my talented Dad's journey, he often gave me advice which as a young person I did not welcome....but I reflect now and know he was so right...sadly when he finally retired he died aged 64years...but as I believe 'the journey is the thing'...
Yours is My kind of poetry...I am a girl after my Dad's heart....
Very best wishes, Diana...
