Plastic protrusions in a glass
Reminders of limits long surpassed
Each approached with calm deliberation
Measures of time in treasured libations
Offered in tribute to the gods in the sky
In praise of their nectars
Made from barley and rye.
Three rocks two fingers
And a swizzle
Come rain or come shine
Or even come drizzle.
The lingo is cool
Part of the in crowd
To be nobody’s fool
The few and the proud.
A drink to survive
A drink to prevail
A drink to forget
A drink to curtail.
Of a future uncertain
Or a love never tried
A relationship gone wrong
A promotion denied.
Sticks that changed my world
In so many ways
Suppressing the need to
Confront in their haze
How many futures
Denied by those sticks?
How many heartaches
Instead of a fix?
How many hopes
Dashed into the ground
How many dreams slashed
Or those never found?
The tally goes on
The haze rolls in thicker
Clarity now stalls
Obscured by the liquor
Tomorrow will be different
A new day of bliss
And speaking of days
Which one is this?
Oh it’s Saturday...
No need to consort
A day to detox
Then another day in court.
...an extraordinary poem...fantastic imagery of poet...voice
given to the silent reminder...handful of swizzle stirrers
that seem to have seen it all...been to the place where life
had been...and now with "brotherly love" report on life's
challenges...few rewards...every slippery slope...to fall
down...ways around it...subsequent depth of the pit...ways
to handle and run from...surprising stiff side...only way
to be taken to climb out by...And
...it doesn't matter how many glasses of an effervescent drink
have been stirred to facilitate the escape...of CO2...using
the simple drink stirrer...there is life's routine to live by
...growing up...drunk one moment...happy or not...making easier
for hope to show up...convinced the fuzzy stuff will start
to fade...when going to new places...where "nothing" and hope
is...all left...Lucky to see...the swizzle stick holding the fruit
garnish...intact...despite the rough handling...
