To Thine Own Self Be True

The road less traveled is the one I chose to take
Treacherous while running dodging hiding
Away from crowds and cares and such
Alone with my thoughts
With hunger always half a step away.

Those early days were filled with emptiness
Too painful to recall with certainty
Yet too meaningful to set aside;
They formed a chiseled vision
That has never failed me—
A resolve to never let trinkets
Be my guide
Nor pettiness a virtue;
A determination that I must
Always be the master of my fate
The captain of my soul
Even at the cost of friendships
Or love.

Desires I’ve had a few
That smited but never
Consumed me
To be ever driven
In search of a condition
So intense it could satisfy
A solitary purpose
That my soul so desperately
Needed—
To walk this path to its rightful end
free from greed and false promises
deserving of the right to
proclaim
I came
I saw
And died
But never dined at the table
Of those two imposters.

With these revealing words you are not only defining your passage through this life but also showing the way for others may not have learned from your experience like you have and ignored yours.

I can relate to your poem. I wanted to be a successful writer, but I was not willing to sell out, write garbage just to make money. No, I wanted to be the master of my own life, which often meant accomplishing the important, but not often the profitable.

Impostors indeed to be avoided at all cost. The poem a true statement of purpose, artfully penned.

An interesting point of view to say the least. For some reason it reminded me of someone I know by reputation that lives completely off the grid, and I do mean OFF! He lives comfortably enough to suit his needs, and though I don't think I could ever recycle my own water (if you get my drift), I do admire his determination to live his life as he wants and not as others would have him do. Too bad I am not that strong.

Even though the journey might not have been smooth , that would be a life well lived.

Let Your Goddess Grow! by Charlene Proctor
