These Precious Days

… Oh, it's a long, long while from May to December
But the days grow short when we reach September …

--from September Song

by Kurt Weill and Maxwell Anderson

Some lyrics are so good that we are transformed to another time and place normally reserved

for those with a keen eye and a finely-tuned sense of hearing. They’re more than prose or poetry. They also carry the gift of

purpose and humility. And in this age of inflation, we’re likely to walk away with a few pennies to the good.

… Oh the days dwindle down to a precious few

September, November…

Where has the time gone? We ask.

We’ve only just begun, some say.

But those of us who have tasted more of life’s good than the bad

Know we dare not bask in the glory nor the weariness of life...

We are not smarter. We’re just a little more experienced.

There is some irony in the birthday card

that proclaims: “It’s nifty to be fifty”

handed to us from someone who is 95

Don’t forget...

There are very few good days past 70.

We never know when it is over

When our allotted time stops

without our consent

When the joys shrink with our disappointments

and they intrude without knocking.

One certainty remains despite all other pleadings

and wishful thinking and such

Of this I am certain--

Before our time runs out.

May I say in all honesty that…

… these few precious days, I’ll spend with you.

These precious days, I’ll spend with you ...

Over 70 years young ? Age is nothing more than a milestone of attitudes... Ageless is mind over matter! The best can be to come if those have spines of steel in spirit, that truly see with eyes of care and concern for others, a charitable heart and hands of humanitarian selflessness. That is medicinal manna for the bones, heart and spirit. Thank you Ed for this):

I really love this one! It's filled with great references that I can relate to. Even though my hearing is nearly gone.

For example, September Song is so mournful and poignant that it's great poetry. But I mourn for all the Great song titles like We've Only Just Begun, along with all of the great book titles that we can no longer use because search engines will never find ours but multiple copies of the classics. If I were to start a band today how could I come up with a unique catchy name like Queen or Kiss?

But like so many others here who have reached that magic 70 where everything seems to start to deteriorate and are anticipating the end of their creativity to the point of, in some cases, a kind of posting desperation.

I tip my head off to you for coming up with that creative poems that are always different and enjoyable to read.

One of my favourite songs sang by Edward Woodward, and has been since I was Eighteen years old…
I used to think of it in terms of my Parents…now it’s myself…
After losing my husband at a relatively young age, your well worded poem really hit the spot…every day is precious, and by appreciating each to the full, and filling them with as good thoughts as we are able, hopefully they will go by a little slower, and with the gift of a grateful heart…life will still hold some special Magic…
