BREATH OF LIFE

They were twins, a smaller sister and a little bigger brother,

Patiently waiting, growing within the warm womb of their mother.

Several months into their increase of weight and size

Both of the tiny twins suddenly and joyfully began to realize

They could, without spoken words, communicate, one with the other,

Bigger brother with his sister and smaller sister with her brother.

The only other being who knew of this sibling thought trade

Was God, in whose image the little twins were being made.

While happily communing, their mother’s voice was overheard,

And although sweet, it was a bit muffled, just a little blurred.

So, they both listened intently as their already beloved mother

Spoke ever so softly, almost secretly to a voice, an unknown other.

Shaken by the words the tiny boy and girl heard that day,

They both offered questions to God, to silently pray.

“Heavenly Father, why is she hesitant about giving us birth?

It was You who sent us from Heaven to breathe here on earth.”

Their thoughts intermingled, but were basically the same,

As they silently called out for answers in God’s most holy name,

“Help us understand, please, please, this we both pray.”

So it was, He surrounded both, embracing each in God’s unique way.

Slowly, the two began to comprehend, but both were forlorn

That the doctor thought they would have problems if ever born.

“Heavenly Father,” the baby boy questioned, do not they realize

You have already given me, like my dad, dimples and beautiful brown eyes?”

The sister asked, “Does she know, like her, I have a cute little nose

And I am learning to wiggle my ten tiny fingers and ten tiny toes?

You, our Almighty, long, long ago destined that soon we would be

A part of Your plan, distinctive branches to Your creation’s extensive family tree?”

The twins came to comprehend the worldly doctor thought he knew

What was best regarding the babies as inside their mother’s womb they grew.

“Heavenly Father,” they prayed in unison, “extend your power, as we want to live.

They do not understand that You have given us gifts that we have to exist to give.

We yearn to be held in our mother’s arms, coo, giggle and eventually talk.

We want to roll over, sit up, crawl across the floor, and eventually walk.

And, as You know, those are only the beginning of things we are to do,

So we humbly ask our mother turn this completely over to You.”

Help her, we most solemnly pray that she come to recognize your design,

Allowing us the precious breath of life, which is both, blessed and divine.”

“The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.”

– Job 33:4
