Shirley Chisholm was known for her moral and ethical character and her unyielding capability to stand up for her community and beliefs.

Shirley Chisholm was an outspoken and tough educator who was encouraged by a blind political science professor to consider politics as a career because of her strong debating abilities.During the 1960s and 1970s, Chisholm broke through racial and gender barriers by becoming a nationwide symbol of liberal politics. Best known for her slogan “Unbought and Unbossed,” Chisholm, in 1968, Chisholm became the first African-American congresswoman, representing New York State in the United States House of Representatives for seven consecutive terms and the first woman to seek the Democratic presidential nomination.
Shirley Chisholm stands out as a woman of firsts. Someone has to be the first, and she certainly had the strength of character and courage to do just that. She should be remembered, especially by young black women trying to break through the glass ceilings above.
