I studied jazz, modern and classical dance with some of the great masters in New York, never with an interest in performing, although I did some of that, but rather as an artistic self-discovery mode that requires nothing other than space, floor, and body. I must confess that pursuit saved my life, and I continue practicing to this day at the spacious studio at Crunch Fitness South Beach.
That is where I met Lucila “Luli” Gonzalez as she was rehearsing for a Crunch Group Fitness PRIDE showcase organized by Alex Fenton, director of group activities, a celebrated fitness trainer who has dedicated himself to teaching various aerobic classes at the location for many years.
“I enjoy watching you fly with your pole,” I said. “You are an excellent dancer.”
“It is not strictly dance,” she corrected me. “There is a flying pole,” she added, "it is not fixed to the floor," then admitted she had studied dance.
“I would agree it is not dance per se, if you are a purist, for a dancer needs nothing but his body and space with a stable floor, no props, nothing to hang on to in order to dance. How much does your equipment bag weigh?”
“Maybe 15 pounds.”
“I would think more,” I replied as I sized her up, guessing her weight at around 110 pounds, height maybe 5’ 7”.
“Maybe so. It feels light to me.”
“It reminds of the saying to never marry a band leader if you do not want to carry tons of gear around. No doubt you have to stay very fit to swing around like you do. Pole dancers are incredibly strong. I have seen some male athletes try it in vain.”
“It takes training. It is very important to warm up beforehand, sometimes for a time much longer than the performance. Maybe not for brief, easier routines repeated in a short period of time, like I sometimes do at events. I learned the hard way when I was injured.”
“I know what you mean. I hated to warm up for dance, stretching was such a bore, I just wanted to jump in, and I am still paying for it. I knew it was stupid but I did stupid, still do. You are very good. Are you with Circus Soleil?”
“No, I prefer to work independently.”
I resolved to attend her performance at Crunch, and that I did, with her as my cynosure, notwithstanding the wonderful sample of group exercises and personal exhibitions no doubt to be exhibited on Instagram. I was thrilled by her performance, in part because of my own artistic and technical prejudices. That would be Vaganova in ballet, Luigi in Jazz, Limon in Modern. I expect to see videos of her performance published on Instagram, and that is nice, but I prefer stills of the poses within the movement, and Luli had them down pat. I hope she will strike her poses to Madonna’s VOGUE as we did with Luigi at Carnegie Hall back in the day.
