Major award shows have been known to be as infamous for their unexpected “upsets” as they have been celebrated for crowd-pleasing wins. Among the upsets in television’s 61st Annual Emmy Awards September 20, 2009, was the double-nominated Grey’s Anatomy star Chandra Wilson’s double loss.
The actress was considered a favorite, even “a shoe-in” as some put it, in the category of supporting actress in a drama series for her role as the tough-as-nails yet big-hearted Dr. Miranda Bailey on the hit TV show Grey’s Anatomy. The Emmy actually went to Cherry Jones for her commander-in-chief performance on “24” as President Allison Taylor. Other nominees included Wilson’s fellow Grey’s Anatomy star actress Sandra Oh, Rose Byrne of Damages, and Diane Wiest and Hope Davis, both from In Treatment.
Wilson was also nominated for her performance in Accidental Friendship in the category for outstanding actress in a miniseries or movie. That Emmy for that category went to veteran actress Jessica Lange for her work in Grey Gardens. In this particular category, in fact, Wilson competed against a veritable A-List ensemble of powerhouse veterans that also included Shirley MacLaine, Sigourney Weaver, and Drew Barrymore.
