As another year comes to a close, I find that there is something refreshing and powerful about the thought of a new year…an exciting opportunity to wipe the slate clean and to try again. Hopefully, you will be able to reflect over the past year and relish in your growth, accomplishments, and successes. As you set goals for the upcoming year, be honest with yourself about what you want to accomplish or achieve as a professional. Goals need to be realistic, well thought out, and meaningful. Before setting your professional goals, consider the following tips to help improve your odds for success:
Put your plan in writing and keep it visible. Think strategically about your plan and the steps and resources necessary to fully execute it. Without a plan of action, your goals become nothing more than a useless wish list
· Set measurable and realistic goals. The more measurable and realistic your goals, the easier it is to determine when you have met them. Don’t wait until the end of the year to measure how you are doing against your goals.
· Commit to your goal. Fortitude and willpower are necessary to see your goals materialize into tangible accomplishments.
· Avoid the professional complacency trap. Look for opportunities to expand your expertise to increase your productivity
· Find a happy balance in your life. Include healthy living and work life balance as part of your overall plan so that your work does not get the best of you.
Remember, developing effective career and lifestyle management strategies will help you successfully balance your personal and professional commitments.
