There is more to a name than the spelling. Whatis the story behind your name?
What is in a name? The name is pronounced “Blahn-dee”. How I ended up with this name is still a mystery.
I still chuckle when my husband and I are introduced and he is referred to as Dagwood. No, I was not born with blonde hair, as some jokingly suggest. Yes, there are black women who wear blonde locks, but I am not one of them. My hair is black. I have never been given a nick name by friends, nor family; they have always call me “Blondie”.
When the group Blondie came on the scene: I thought, “They stole my name”. The name “Blondie” is often given as a nickname to women with blonde hair. The etymology and history of the name as a first name refers to the female gender, with the usage being English.
I can’t help wondering why an African American would name their child “Blondie”. Over 50 years ago, my granddaddy decided to give me that name; however, he died before I had the opportunity to query his reason for such a choice.
Little did I know that my granddaddy had given me a gift that would last forever: my own personal icebreaker via the name “Blondie”. Boy, has it made a lasting impression on those who have crossed my path over the years. It sure lessens the tension of meeting new people, especially those from different cultures.
Thank you, granddaddy for giving me that name.
In the earlier years of my life, I had the opportunity to watch the television version of “Blondie” and to read about her in the daily comic strips. I was sad to see "Blondie" gone from my television screen, but occasionally I catch up on my namesake’s newspaper version. The era of wholesome television is a thing of the past but “Blondie”, Dagwood, and their family have a special place in this “Blondie’s” heart.
