January 2009 disappearing off the calendar 1/23/2009 10:28:45 PM
With all the build up to Christmas, holidays to look forward to, the hope of the New Year gone, it's a sad state of affairs that I'm now facing only a week left of my leave before I have to return to the drone of a working life. The weather in Sydney sux badly. It is so hot that all we can do is stay indoors with the air conditioners on and drink lots of fluids. The two dogs are happy just to lie on the tiles in the cool and not venture outside. Getting them out for loo breaks isn't on their agendas. They appear to be keeping it all in and only heading out when it's desperation time.
I had to venture out this morning to do a few shopping tasks so I left home at 8.30. It was already stifling as it hadn't cooled down all night. By the time I returned home at 11.30 I felt like I had done a hard day's work. Pity all those people out there today, and for most days in January, that are working outdoors or at premises that are not air conditioned. I wonder how we survived before air conditioning; but I remember how. We didn't know any different so there wasn't anything to miss. It's 42.5 celcius here today which is about 103 on the farenheit measurement. We are expecting a drop in temperature overnight to around 28 tomorrow. However from then on up it goes to 39 next Saturday. I really do detest summer.
We are in the thick of the summer cricket season in Australia and at the moment the big games are between Australia and South Africa. As there wasn't anything worth watching on all the foxtel and local TV last night, I ended up watching the cricket game that was held in Sydney - 50 overs a side.
I was appalled and disgusted to see the Australian Captain and some of the other team members continually spitting on the ground during the hours they were fielding last night. What a great example of how an adult should act! Someone should have sent a message out to the field telling them that their filthy past-time was being beamed around the country and probably the world. Perhaps they might have had enough pride in themselves to cease the action. Children are such apes of their heroes. I can see the young boys who watched the match now spitting all over the place thinking that it's quite acceptable because Ricky Ponting the Australian Cricket Captain does it in front of 37,000 people at the grounds and millions on TV.
I also wish that they would scratch their family jewels when the camera isn't focused on them. One of the bowlers was being photographed from the waist down as he rubbed the dirty ball (the state of the ball being the topic of the discussion at the time by the commentators) and decided to give a bit of a rub and a tug while he was at it - possibly the jewels needed a shine? Come on guys! We all know Aussie men are supposed to be crass, but this is really not something we want to look at.
A cool change just arrived - it's 6.30 pm Saturday so the temperature should tumble now hopefully.
