Changes for the better
9/4/2004 7:04:51 PM

Have you ever noticed how some of the most traumatic things that happen to us in our lives often initiate a chain of events that ends up actually BETTERING our circumstances? For example, I, a single mother of three, lost my job on Monday. After three and a half years of loyal service to my employer, they terminated me for a simple error that anyone could have made; that "anyone" just happened to be me. At first, I was devastated; what the hell was I going to do? How was I going to care for myself and my babies? Not being the type of person to wallow in self-pity, I high-tailed it to a college in my area, applied for aide, and am now going to school to be a nurse practitioner. I've also already been hired part-time at a day-care center near my school, which means that I get free child care and pre-school for my children. This is something that I've wanted to do for years (okay, well more so art school but college in general), but that loyalty I had toward my employer kept me working rather than achieving my education. The one thing that I've come to realize is that corporations HAVE no loyalty to their employees and I honestly wasn't doing anyone any favors by staying in a job that I hated (though I have to admit, getting fired still rubs you raw no matter the turn-out). Despite the hurt and anger over my termination, things are actually going MY way for once; instead of me falling in with someone else's schedule, I'm writing my own. I guess what I'm trying to say is that there really IS a silver lining to every cloud, the wind from one door closing opens another and other such clever proverbial sayings. Nothing can knock you down and keep you there unless you let it and life changing opportunites arise every single day. I know I have no intentions of letting this opportunity pass me by, and I hope no one else let's anything slip away from them that could honestly make their short span of time here THAT much better.
