Focus: Fallujah 11/9/2004 3:58:18 PM
The increased number of deaths, American, non- American, military, and especially civilian really upsets me. I hope that’s still American.
I understand the risk. If I venture off script, someone will call me anti-American. Focus. Fallujah. We’re liberating the hungry survivors in Fallujah today. Only a traitor’s mind could wander at a time like this. Despite the risk, the initial shock and awe has worn off and unanswered questions flood my thoughts.
Am I the only one still wanting answers to the questions surrounding the Osama Bin Laden tape that conveniently surfaced election week? It deserved full media attention at a crucial time in the campaign, yet they dropped it immediately, without answers. Was the tape real? Where did it come from? When was it made? I want follow-through. Or have curiosity and the quest for knowledge become un-American?
What about all the other wars we’re fighting? We have wars on countries, wars on concepts and behaviors, admitted wars, hidden wars, popular wars and unpopular wars, real wars and implied wars. We have wars against other countries, and internal wars against one another. Are we winning any of these wars?
We still have a mess, a debt, and 20,000 troops in Afghanistan. What exactly did the election-American-style accomplish, other than to remind me how little the Bush administration values honest elections? I wish we had paid more attention when Donald Rumsfeld endorsed an election where it was reported that many voters had filled out two or more registration cards in different districts and in some areas the number of registered voters had surpassed the estimated number of voting-age inhabitants. So, a woman cast the first vote in Afghanistan. Has it helped her any? My questioning mind wants the rest of the story. I don’t think that’s anti-American. Aren’t we supposed to look for the truth?
I don’t understand the wars on concept, or why we continue to pour billions of dollars into them. How can we fight drugs, poverty, terror, domestic violence, mental illness, or homelessness? Wouldn’t it make more sense to fight the people and policies that cause these problems? I’m equally confused by the wars on truth and civil rights, since they threaten our freedom more than any country or concept could.
I thought I might have imagined the war on truth, since I didn’t see the outrage I thought it deserved, but I’m beginning to hear rumblings of information war in the news.
I’m terrorized by threats of future wars on every country that has something we want, or wants something we have. That could be every country. Maybe we should just declare war on war, and end the insanity?
Now that I got that off my chest, I’ll try not to think about the retreating glaziers that are declaring war on us, and focus on Fallujah for the rest of the day.
