Maybe Michael's assistance dog Katie will eventually alert us of nighttime seizures (she has once already)---BUT if she never does, in just one year, she has been worth her weight in gold for the significant change she's made in our lives. In Missing Michael, I describe sleepless nights and worrisome days waiting for the next seizure. Now, at least, Michael has recovered some level of independence. He can go to college---, he can go on a WALK IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD without me being a lunatic fretting till he's safely arrived home. Imagine! Oh those images---Michael seizing with no help in sight or worse maybe, Michael seizing and someone mistaking it for something else and harming him, or worse still....well-that's how it goes or how it went , until Katie. I wish all people with hard to control seizures; those who have borne ridicule, scorn, and so on (and on) could experience the liberation of a service dog. Michael has, and for that I will be eternally grateful. Now if we could only STOP the seizures. Life would be grand and then some!
