The NY Times article published today,"Son's Death Recasts Image of a British Leader", came to my attention via another epilepsy board member. I was struck by the tone---so respectful, sensitive, and (I'm struggling to find the right word) meaningful, YES, meaningful. Little Ivan Cameron died of an episode related to a rare seizure disorder which rendered him disabled in many routine activities of daily living. What Ivan did not lack during his all too brief life, was the ferocious love and devotion of his parents. The article speaks about the Conservative leader and his wife sleeping on the floor of Ivan's hospital room so he would not be alone. It was a story reminiscent of some I know too well--Sarah never leaving Jake's side at the Cleveland Clinic after he had dramatic brain surgery to try to get his seizures under control; the dear woman in the room next to Michael's last summer who maintained  vigil over her 40 year old son who had a shot at "normalcy" if he qualified for a particular surgical procedure; Barry, my husband, always assuming the night shift during Michael's hospital stays, and putting in a full day's work once his "shift" was over. Devoted all---not so different really from David Cameron. I hope the Camerons find peace eventually in their memories and in the knowledge that they gave their son all they had. AND, they have educated a country in the process about the personal, financial and health care resources needed to care for a chronically ill child; but more importantly, they have epitomized the exquisiteness of parental love.
