Not everyone celebrates Christmas--but the world could embrace what Christmas encompasses. Merry Christmas. Sometimes I hesitate to say that; I'm not unaware or indifferent to the fact that not everyone celebrates Christmas. But I do, as my family does, and families are united in part through the traditions of shared celebrations.
Although I went to the Episcopalean church when I was little, at one point, my father decreed that the family would henceforth be atheists, so Christmas became secular in our house.
Except it didn't. My siblings and I still listened to the old carols that are so hard to hear now. And as much as celebrating the birth of Christ, I was always touched by the humanity of some of them, the goodness.
Who--regardless of religion or lack of religion can't hope for "peace on earth, to men goodwill." "O Little Town of Bethlehem' sung properly, gives me goosebumps. And the line,
"The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight" is hope for human survival at its purest.
Merry Christmas to all of you--with hopes that you find peace and gladness, and hope. For those who celebrate the birth of Christ, I join you. But for everyone--I wish you the great joy of the season.
