Sometimes what you need is across the world...so go, already! My sister Stephanie and I have written all our lives, pursuing publication through heartbreak, travels, and dead ends--much as many writers, of course, but with that personal combination of hope and dread shared each time another manuscript went out into the world.
Stephanie actually has supported herself as a writer, working for both the Bandera Times and Bandera Courier in Bandera, Texas for a number of years, while I have had the occasional success in short markets.
Neither of us had garnered publication with a traditional press--until Stephanie married a Scotsman and set out to find her own version of Brigadoon. (A musical she liked more than me, but that her husband abhors as stereotypical and totally unrepresentative of his Scotland.)
So--days after she arrived in Scotland, a UK publisher snatched up her Miz Mike series of Christian romantic suspense; the first book will come out in May.
Couldn't be published here? They love her in London!
But it gets better--her husband sent out a time travel. Sold it first time out the door--to a Texas publisher. Did I mention Stephanie's home of choice, and birthplace, is Texas? And that her husband's publisher is a stone's throw from all her old haunts?
Can't call it fate, because Stephanie would credit the God who has always sustained her. But ironic? Yeah--I can call it that. But as irony goes--it's the kind that makes you cry good tears. And sometimes--makes you believe. Again.
