Perspective
This has been a while ago, but I wanted to pass this on to you.
I was at my local barber, just talking actually I don't have enough hair to get it cut every two weeks. Anyway, I was listening to a man and his son have an argument about what the son was going to do over summer vacation, before he started his first year of college.The father was saying that his son should go to work during the summer to earn some extra money before college, because the father would not be able to pay for every little thing that his son might want, like dating or going out to eat instead of eating school food.
The son was arguing that he wanted to have some fun before school like go hiking with his friends out west and go to the beach down at Destin and maybe even take two weeks and go through Europe. He was complaining that he wanted to have some fun before he started school.
There was an older gentleman who was getting his hair cut who had been listening to this conversation, pretty hard not to do, and he had been smiling.The young man noticed that the older man was smiling and asked him, "Don't you agree, sir. I mean you're only 17 once, didn't you want to have some fun at 17 instead of working?"
The older man held up his hand for the barber to stop cutting his hair, leaned forward and said, "I was 17 on the beaches of Iwo Jima," then he sat back in the chair for the barber to continue.
The father just smiled. The son looked shell shocked, appropriate don't you think. The father said, "Kind of puts everything in perspective doesn't it son?"
Perspective. What an amazing skill to master. So the next time you are complaining or whinning about the fact that you can't do something or don't want to do something, remember that someone had to sacrifice for you and me, so that we can have a little fun from time to time.
