Twas the Night Before..... 8/8/2007 7:02:30 PM
Twas the night before the book signing and all through the place,
All my books were sitting around in the case,
The people were standing by the table with care,
In hopes that W.C. soon would be there.
The children were coraled with no chance to get loose,
Sitting in the floors and reading Dr. Seuess,
And mama in her best dress in I in my suit,
Were hoping to walk home with a pocket of loot.
When out in the mall there arose a big clammer,
I looked up from my table to see what was the matter,
Of to the entrance I ran like a flash,
Then came back quickly cause I forgot the cash.
The smell that came from the Starbucks cafe,
Reminded me of just how much I used to pay.
When I found what had caused that real big noise,
It was the kids in Disney playing with the toys.
The parents scream loudly and ran for the store,
Taking their books as they ran for the doors,
And they hollered and whistled as they called them by names,
Now Susie, now Bobbie, now Billy Ray too,
Come Harry, come Larry and Little Betty Sue,
Dont break those toys, dont tear them all up,
We just spent fourteen dollars on this stupid book
So stop tearing up those figures, stop ripping them apart,
Let's get this book signed so when can go to Wal-Mart
Like the sound of leaves blown down an empty street,
All I could hear was the sound of tiny little feet,
Stamping and stomping in the middle of the mall,
Refusing to listen or obey their parents at all.
The rucus that followed spread like a wave,
With kids coming from everywhere to their friends aid.
And parents began playing those old childhood games,
With several of them coming up lame.
The children ran and laughed as their parents chased,
Trying to catch up but not keeping pace.
I watched the event while covering a grin,
And laughed so loud that I'm sure it was a sin.
Then the parents began to threaten and scream,
So all the kids stopped and walked as if in a dream,
Taking their hands, with some crying softly,
Others with defiant and acting very haughty.
Back in the store they came in a line,
Not stopping, not delaying not wasting any time.
They were out of breath and red in the face,
And ran up to my table like it was a competative race,
To see how quickly they could return their purchase,
And then every parent search through the cases,
To find find that one book that did make sense,
Not a book full of mystery or a thriller and suspense,
But books on parenting, aerobics and things,
Like working out, or teaching these little human beings.
The smile on my face turned into a frown,
And suddenly I felt very, very down.
My books were now stacked in a very big pile,
They were on my table, the carpet and covered the tile.
With a tear in my eye I put my head in my hand,
And wished I lived in a very far away land.
Then I heard a noise that began very low,
And as I listened it began to grow.
It was a bell that was beginning to ring,
And after a while it began to sing.
I awoke from my dream and let out a big sigh,
The whole thing had been a big lie.
So help me keep the vision from coming true,
Davis Kidd at six will keep me from being blue,
And this advice comes from my gut,
If you dont like it, keep your mouth shut.
