Catching up...even further 4/11/2007 10:27:28 AM
As I mentioned in my last blog entry, my friend Larry and I would leave Salem, late Monday night and drive back to Eugene. Before we left Salem, we decided to stop for something to eat. There is a Denny's Restaurant just off the interstate and so that's where the car stopped.
When we entered we were quickly greeted, seated and had menu's delivered to our table. Here's where things get sticky.
This really wasn't a menu...it was more like a major novel with pictures of all the delicious items they serve. Pages one through seven were breakfast. Chapter two was lunch and Chapter three was dinner. I counted at least ten pages but it wouldn't surprise me if it ended up at fifteen or twenty pages. I was searching for something basic, not to be found. Larry said in his somewhat Boston accent..."Where the hells the basic stuff; bacon and eggs, stuff like that?"
I was also confused and when we asked the waitress to help take us through this maze of gastronomical confussion.
The poor lady was as confused as we were, until she found a small section of something called 'yummy somethings' or something like that. Our question was whats happened to going out to restaurants anymore. You need thirty minutes to read the menu and hope and pray you can find what you want. I thought this was total overkill, until I stopped for lunch on my way home on Tuesday.
Hillsboro, Oregon is like many other suburban towns around the country...they've been swallowed up by urban sprawl; which means more major malls than you could ever hope and pray for. One of the major chains that planted itself in Hillsboro is a chain called Shari's. They serve average food, but consistently average all over the Pacific Northwest. Their signature item is their bakery, making very good pies, cinnamon rols and other bakery goods.
Whenever I'm on my way back to the coast I try to stop at Shari's for at least a slice of pie. I recommend you try the marionberry pie...absolutely delicious.
After being seated I was handed their brand spanking new from the printer, menu. Twenty Two pages, I got weary just looking at the menu with all it has to offer. Once I arrived at the burger section they offered their new fantabulous burger with all the garnishes one would ever eat. I ate half of the burger and only a few of the fries, and mentally told myself that I would never try that again. It was just an average burger with a fancy namae and inflated price to boot.
I yearn for the day when you could go to a restaurant and see all it has to offer on one page...is that too much to ask?
Imagine a burger, fries and coffee takes up half my social security benefit.
Well...I'm almost back to normal, whatever the hell that is so...ciao for now!
