I thought that I'd take up valuable interweb space by re-posting some blogs about the writing of some of the stories from my collection, Abominations. Enjoy...won't you? ;) I was approached by Wayne Simmons, head of SHINY HOO-HAA publications, to submit a story for an anothology he was editing called Love, Damned Love. Great, I thought. Can do.
Oh, and it's all about erotic horror. The more erotic and horrible, the better.
Urm...uh-oh.
You see, the problem was that I'm about as erotic as a piece of white bread. You know how some female horror writers just drip sexiness, with the goth make-up and the 'dark fairy' type clothing and all that? Well, that's not me. At all. That picture of me over on the left? That was the most make-up I'd worn in a long time. White bread.
But I really wanted to submit something to this anthology, so I started percolating ideas. And I got utterly, completely stuck. I'm talking complete blank. I could not think of anything that was remotely original or new, and the ideas that I did come up with weren't particularly sexy or scary. So I let myself quit thinking about it and resigned myself to missing the deadline.
And then one day at work, while I was blithely adding books to the library's collection, I had a sudden flash of an image in my mind of a woman-thing swallowing a man's leg up to his knee. Uber deep-throat, in other words. And then it all kind of fell into place from that. I'd wanted to do something with a mermaid in a story, and for some reason, it tied into that weird image.
I think I wrote the story in just a few days. It's not a massively complex plot--guy meets girl of his dreams and lives to regret it--so that was pretty simple to figure out. The hard part (no pun intended) was writing the sex scenes...because the version that appeared in Love, Damned Love was very hardcore.
I decided to write it from the guy's point of view (and to all you men out there, I hope I did it justice) and to just go for broke. When I finished, I was pretty surprised that it came out of me. The ending was the most fun for me to write, though. After a while, writing sex scenes gets pretty boring.
I cleaned it up a little for inclusion in my collection because...actually, I'm not sure why. I think that subconsciously I'm afraid my sex scenes are laughable.
If anyone reads this story, I'd be interested in hearing your opinion of the sex scene stuff. :D
