Yeah, I wrote a romance novel. I happen to like reading them occasionally, so I tried my hand at writing one.
Go ahead...make fun of me if you'd like.
The truth is, romance novels are the Rodney Dangerfields of the literary world. They get no respect at all. Before I started reading them, I dismissed the genre as trite and dumb and formulaic. And while there ARE some romance writers who crank out the same plot with different exotic character names, there are a lot of really good novels out there that are ignored because people have bought into the stereotype, the way I used to do.
I wanted to write a romance like some of my favorite authors: LaVyrle Spencer, Jude Deveraux, etc. and so on. Actually, I had the courage to make the heroine of this story a plus-sized woman because of a book Jude Deveraux wrote called "Wishes." It was the first romance novel I'd ever read where the heroine wasn't perfect, and it stuck with me over the years.
I'm not trying to make any kind of statement with my choice of a plus-sized heroine. In fact, I've found that in real life, finding a guy like the hero in my story is right up there with getting Bigfoot and Nessie together for a family photo: it ain't gonna happen. (I forgot to mention that for an occasional romance writer, I'm horribly cynical and pessimistic when it comes to real-life romances).
If anyone reads this book, I hope they enjoy it. The story might be a little cliche and corny, and the sex scene might be a bit laughable, but...it's what I'm putting out there.
Next romance on the agenda? A pirate time-travel (with Gerard Butler in mind for the hero).
