The "Donauschwaben" or Danube Swabians and their persecution by Tito's communist regime and Russia. My brother Larry just sent me this link to the site of Katherine Hoeger-Flotz, who shares her memories of the town of Gakowa both good and bad. An ethnic German who had nothing to do with WW2, she escaped to America after four years of persecution, enduring Yugoslavia's first ethnic cleansing. According to an old map of the town passed down from my Grandmother Katherina Mayer (born Strall), my Grandfather John A. Mayer may have lived in the house next door until the family decided to move to Canada before the war. I was spellbound the entire time I read her story and thankful that my family was able to foresee the madness and leave in time.
