Life in any given era has always been hectic. We made it so. Today we are faced with economic troubles that worsen daily and corrupting technology (it corrupts when you become too dependent on it). What would people do today without a "cell phone". All I see around me are strangers walking, talking to themselves (using a Bluetooth), or have the all too obvious cell phone glued to their ear. What makes this bad, is they are doing it in the car when they should be focusing on driving!
This is part of the technological era. We have all in one way become a slave to it. Some to handy pocket size phones, others to computers (guilty--I wouldn't know how to write without one. The day of the typewriter and "Wite Out" still makes me shudder). And if you think about it. What would happen if all the computers in the world went down for just one single day. Chaos, plain and simple! Oh, I love my abundant channels on cable TV, my 5.1 Dolby surround sound, DVDS with their wonderful clarity and the music CD. I too, am a sucker to society's growth. I could justify this statement by qualifying that these tools aids me in my writing--but that would not be entirely true. I would be fooling myself, as are many parents who ignore the effect this technology has on our children, I have written about this corrosive influence on "The Den" in many articles, as well as my novels. Using digital aids as playtime is just not normal, nor is it traditional childhood play.
Now for the adults. Our wings (and we all have them) are arthritic and stagnant from lack of use. Even in a great economy, we still would not have the guts to venture forth and fly towards our wildest dreams. We settle for complacency and worry, glued to the living or TV room couch.
I'm beginning my flight and I might add, much later in my life than I hoped for--and maybe it won't be too late for me. It all comes down to you and one simple credo to guide us daily: "Live should be a journey not a destination."
