What's a SPEDI recovery from surgery? 5/11/2009 5:58:39 AM
Five things determine whether or not your surgery will be successful and if you'll return home in one piece. Consider:
S = you surgeon's skill, knowledge and attitude toward you and your operation: ask about the surgeon's experience (don't be shy)
P = you, the patient and the number of co-morbid or associated medial problems you have (e.g. diabetes, chronic lung disease, kideney failure, etc.); can you better prepare yourself?
E = the scientific evidence that supports the indications for and value of your proposed operation; is it a common operation or something new (if new, BEWARE!)
D = your particular disease, be it cancer, wear and tear of a joint, gallstnes, etc.; all diseases have their own staging, threat to life, and time course; what is the disease treat to you?
I = institution or hospital you choose; you may need a specailty hospital or a high volume hospital with high volume surogensif your surgery is on the pancreas, eshophagus (gullet), or major vascular surgery; many smaller hospitals are competent for many operations
There it is: the list you should use to decide if your proposed ooperation is necessary and worth the risk versus the benefits. Take this list with you to your appointment with a surgeon.
