Who am I? Your advocate for safe surgery 4/24/2015 4:48:02 AM
I'm moving forward with my interests in providing useful information to those of you who may need an operation in the near future. Quality is on the minds of most surgical organizations, but it doesn't seem to filter down to the folks who need it. That's my job going forward. It seems I have an incurable need to pass on information. I guess it's the teacher instinct in me. Probably why I just received another major teaching award from Tufts University School of Medicine (Wow! Was that not subtle self-promotion!) Probably has little to do with what I know. What does anyone really know in a world that's spinning so fast with information? That's a future blog - how quickly information doubles and how we in health care don't manage it so well.
As my surgical practice slows down, I find my urge to teach and prepare not only my medical students and residents, but also you, the folks who want to know more about what really goes on in the operating room and its environs. There's a huge bottleneck at that ill-defined place where scientific publications could be modified and stripped of the medspeak gobblygook and offered to you in basic terms. Don't misinterpret this to mean 'dumbing down'. That would be a true insult. I mean to create real meaning so you can ask the appropriate questions of your surgeon and other providers.
If you're going to enter a modern high tech hospital, especially for surgery, you need to be prepared. You need a personal care team to watch out for your best interests. And you need to be sensitive to news that there's a breakthrough in...name your favorite scary disease. Be cautious. Be vigilant. Be a little suspicious.
Going forward I'm going to continue to pick specific, focused topics of interest for surgical patients. All of the twenty-odd awards for teaching remind me that there is a larger audience for surgical and related information that is as under-served with good medical information as segments of our population are with basic health care. I feel I should devote more time in helping. I think about connecting with you as a second career. Fortunately, I don't have anyone placing a filter between me and my material on this blog.
