Encouraging everybody to understand their very personal genome

I've been receiving early reaction from senior scientific and medical colleagues from many countries . . .
It has been very heartening to hear back from colleagues in science, biology, bioinformatics and biomedical sciences, that they appreciate my writing a book that explains the importance of understanding the human genome to folks who come from a non-scientific background. We are entering a golden age of genetics, and genomics, in which previously untreatable genetically-driven diseases will be slowed or cured. On a less serious but intriguing aspect, we are beginning to read the history of our ancestors going back at least a million years.
I thought this important - so important that people with no knowledge of medicine, biology or genetics, should be given the opportunity to understand it. I've started to explain it on my website www.fprbooks.com. I'm also encouraging colleagues to consider helping in this very worthwhile public relations exercise, helping ordinary folks to grasp the wonder and basic functioning of their very own genomes. I know that they will respond positively since I have begun to lecture to non-scientists on this same theme, and I find my audiences both understand it and appreciate it.
We are about to enter an era when your genome may be read and predict your reaction to powerful drugs - this is called "predictive medicine". We are also entering an era when we can predict some of folk's risks of developing illnesses in the future.
Your genome is wonderful. It is also a lot stranger than we first thought it would be. I would encourage anybody and everybody to take an interest in this, since it will not only open up your minds to the wonder of heredity but also potentially to help you and uour families in the future.
