completing the preparation of Virus X
I have completed organising the Word file of Virus X - I was reminded of the terrifying events and places involved, not least the fact I conducted a series of interviews to plot the extraordinary first arrival of ebola. I thought about updating the book to the present day, but this would create a new book and wouldn't make any difference to the main points of the original, which were that emerging infections, and emerging viruses in particular, are extremely dangerous. And that viruses are not at all what I, as a consultant physician, thought they were . . .
I have given the book a Swift Publishers ISBN. Comes in handy if you own your own small press publishers.
I was pleased to be reminded that I used the term "holobiont" in the book, which was published as long ago as 1996. This concept is now entering evolutionary parlance in relation to genomes - the human genome is a perfect example of a holobiontic genome, a genome comprising more than one evolutionary lineage brought about by genetic symbiosis - something I later introduced.
The key thing at this stage is to keep in mind certain key points.
1. Remember to keep the cover as a separate file rather than attaching it before moving to make the pdf file.
2. Keep the cover simple.
3. Check with the guys preparing the e-book from the pdf that the links between the chapter heads in the contents pages do take the reader straight through to the relevant chapter. Ditto on the reference marks within the text and the reference section at the book.
4. Be comforted that one doesn't need to do the same with the index, which is very detailed. In fact kindle readers can just pick up a word, or a name, in the index and do a search through the text to find the relevant text.
Tomorrow the cover - and then on to the EPub and Mobi (the latter is more or less the kindle).
