Welcome to John Herlihy, Author and Essayist.
I like to tell my students that I am a writer (not a professor of writing) and that they are writers (not students learning how to write) in my class. They seem to appreciate that distinction a good deal in their expectations for the course. In a writing course, I think they enjoy seeing themselves as budding writers and not tedious students slogging through yet another writing assignment.
Similarly, I like to identify myself as an essayist rather than a novelist to my readers, primarily because I am not a story-teller, although many of my essays are informed and hopefully enriched by story-telling. My father would never read a book unless he knew it was a “true story”. Perhaps I am following in his footsteps by never writing anything that isn’t a “true story”.
I write different kinds of essays, featuring articles on culture, tradition, nature, life-style, alternative medicine, health/well-being, together with in-depth travel essays to exotic and less travelled destinations that offer a wealth of cultural, linguistic, natural and even spiritual experiences that help shape our understanding of the world, whether it be familiar or strange, exotic or alien, around us.
I have recently developed an interest in writing poetry. This was never a cultivated interest of mine over the years. I enjoyed a good poem as anyone might; but I had no special interest in poetry, and never actually wrote poems, until recently. I now regularly write poems on “the human condition”, on topics and themes that impact our perception of ourselves and the world around us.
I will be posting samples and excerpts from poems, essays and book chapters in the coming weeks and months. I wish everyone a happy and satisfying reading experience on John Herlihy, Author and Essayist.
