Now I have the knowledge I can share with you the rest of the story of what happened after Jack fell into the hole.
Being a better rider, Jack was able to pass them, and block them off at the end of the path at the golden tree. He was about to hit the brakes when the bike collapsed underneath him. As the bike fell, his body was thrown into the branches that had scattered from the impact. Falling down to land on his back, he could see the branch coming towards him. Desperately, he wanted to move out of the way. He couldn’t leave Vanessa alone to fend for herself. Why couldn’t he move? The question was unanswered as the branch, shaped like an arrow, made its way into his heart. Inside the hole the bike fell silent as the boys looked at Jack’s limp body lying on the ground.
Gavin checked for a pulse but there was nothing. Rolling the body into the hole, his brothers wanted to know what he was doing.
‘We’ll put his body with the bike in the hole. Nobody comes here, so they won’t know where he is,’ said Gavin with relief that Jack was out of the way.
His brothers were shaken up as they watched their brother cover up the hole again so it would blend in with the mulch surrounding the tree.
Then Richard started to worry as he looked back to the house in the distance. ‘What if Vanessa saw?’
‘I don’t think so,’ said Gavin. ‘Let’s go for a ride further into the woods and we’ll talk.’
‘You thought that Jack would be interested in you,’ Gavin sneered to her as he walked up to the dining table. ‘Only a few minutes ago, he told me that he thinks you’re pathetic. He thinks that he’ll have to go to the doctor for a checkup after you tried to kiss him.’
Vanessa looked at her mother hoping that she would defend her daughter in some way, but she hadn’t even heard what Gavin had said. Lucinda was too deep in conversation with Mason to notice anything that was going on around her.
All Vanessa could think of, was Jack crashing into a tree. How did it happen? Has he survived; waiting for someone to help him? Different scenarios kept creeping into her head. Screaming would have been nice but she didn’t want to upset his mother even more than she already was.
Hours passed as they sat on the bench at the front of the house hoping that Jack would ride up the driveway on his bike. The longer they waited, the more they lost hope. The more convinced they were that Gavin had something to do with it. Vanessa hated him more than ever now. She pictured him sitting on the school bus feeling smug about what he had done; thinking that he was clever enough to elude the law. She had heard about karma and knew that he would be getting his, especially if she had anything to do with it. Making him suffer was her first priority.
