WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO WRITE FICTION 4/10/2018 1:38:17 PM
An article about what is it to write fiction. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO WRITE FICTION?
What is fiction? Fiction is make-believe. A fabrication of facts. If a story is made up, it’s fiction. Fiction is a story that is derived from imagination.
Novels are fiction.
Fairy-tales are fiction.
Although you may write fiction because it’s false, often times it may seem real. A good fictional story will make a reader care about the characters. You want the reader to feel as if your characters are either friends or enemies?
After some people read my first published book, Sunday Golf, I had numerous men who identified with my character, Russell. He had been physically abused by his wife.
Where does fiction come from?
Constantly, writers recycle real events obtained from areas such as but not limited to newspaper articles, history, etc. and make it into a fictional story. Anything can be made into a work of fiction. For example:
•People you know become characters but their names changed.
•Eavesdropping on people’s conversations.
•Events in the newspaper where the names, events, and setting are changed.
•Personal situations that may involve but not limited to romance, deception, kidnap, etc.
•Other people’s circumstances of betrayal, divorce, abuse.
These details can turn into a fictional novel. Sunday Golf resulted from me being a new golfer. I discovered that when men and women golf, the experience is quite different. Most men just want to golf while the majority of women view golfing as a social outing to meet people.
As I began writing the story, I embellished the facts yet the characters felt real and so did the story. My goal was to get the reader to identify with the characters and from the comments I accomplished just that.
To me, writing fiction is turning reality into a make-believe story. I believe that if you have an imagination, you can write fiction.
