Diamonds and Dirt

He wanted to love her, she was all he could see
A girl of such beauty, dark hair flowing free
But she would ignore him, each time he would flirt
She did not want a man, that made his life from the dirt

Tied down in a small town, she did not want to be
A good life in the city, was all she could see
So she boarded a bus, bid the small town goodbye
From a distance he watched her, tried hard not to cry

Her life in the city, was all she had dreamed
She had found what she wanted, at least so it seemed
She married a rich man, her hands diamond clad
Her new life was perfect, until it went bad

His love turned to anger, Her joy turned to tears
Her dreams turned to nightmares, her love turned to fear
She would look out the window, and the moon did remind
Of a man that had liked her, in a time left behind

She little did know on that night, late in June
That a lonely man looked at that same old pale moon
A longing to love her, his lonely heart yearns
And he prays every night for the day she returns

She at last found the nerve to do as she should
And got back on that bus just as fast as she could
She stepped off of the bus, at long last she is home
As she makes a vows that no more she will roam

She got hired as a waitress in the small town café
Working long hours, at minimal pay
She would sit and think back, at times now and then
And wonder if she could ever be happy again.

Then while waiting on tables, one hot summer day
She turned as she heard, the old juke start to play
There at the juke box, the seed sowing man
Dirt on his boots, and a rose in his hand

In an old cotton shirt , and dusty Levi’s
He walked up to the waitress, looked into her eyes
“This rose is for you, he said with a frown
I planted this rosebush the day you left town”

“I don’t know a whole lot, where love is concerned.
But if you give me a chance, I will try hard to learn.
I am not a rich man, I’ve not much to give
But I promise I’ll love you as long as I live.”

True love came to be, on that hot summer day
They now are together, forever to stay
She at last found the secret, beyond all the hurt
The only true diamonds are found in the dirt.

That is absolutely beautiful, Jack. Sometimes what we most want and need is right in our own backyard.
Kudos on a well written poem.
