My Room

This piece wrote itself while I was thinking of those who suffer from agoraphobia, the inability to leave their houses.

My Room

My room is my refuge

And my prison

My sanctuary

And my cage

It gives me safety

From almost everyone

And keeps me

From their rage.

It’s a haven from

Unpleasantness

And a safe harbor from

Fear

It protects me from

The world

But the cost of my safety

Is quite dear.

I stay cloistered in

This womb I’ve have created

Of concrete walls

And an over-locked door

I refuse to answer

When someone taps

Because it rattles me

To the core.

I will escape this room someday

And begin to live anew.

It may take a long time

But it’s something only I can do.

Stay where you are, nothing is all that wonderful outside...but if you must leave your room, try a few Xanax, nothing outside will then matter...Ed

I can also relate, as my home is my sanctuary...the one place I can make the world make sense...well expressed and moving...

Oh how can I relate to a certain point to this one!!

Don't have the phobia but surely prefer the calmness I feel being in my PC room!!

Must be horrible to live like this. Your ending provides the light of hope.

This is a sad phobia, I used to counsel someone with it! You describe it well Bobbi! Great message/poem!

A very sad 'story', but wonderful penned. Often it seems as if the only place safe is a hideout, a prison that keeps the world out.

I meet a lady that was scared of her own shadow. It was only after I had been talking to another person that I discovered she had this fear and that I was fortunte that she would allow me into her space. Sad when this happens. Great write.

This world is a place of fear and pain. I used to respond to it in quite a different way. The only way to escape the dark is by surrendering to the Light. This process in my case involved reading more than a rather large bookshelf can contain, casting away any limit created by the ignorant mind of man, not wasting any time on pondering the insolvability of paradox (that stem from the same mind) and a relentless quest for the truth. Yet this was not enough to escape; the Light dragged me out after watching me unsuccessfully struggle for decades. Now this world is still saturated with pain, but the fear has gone. Take care,

A living hell is what that has to be. Reminds me of the show "Monk," where he had a brothher who was even worse off that he was. Good poem.

Bobbi,

I can't imagine not being able to leave the home, because of fear. You capture the duplicity of agorophobia well: the wanting to escape the four walls of your "prison" but the uncertainty of leaving the safety of four walls. BRILLIANT work!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
